Dowry has been termed illegal in our country. But even today people offer it openly. It is a tradition where parents give something as a dowry when their girl child gets married. But today we are talking about the thing that is being offered to girl, it is not jewelry or goodies but a poisonous snake. It is weird but it is true.

This is the real story of Joginagar village of Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh. There is a community of snakes charmers live in this village which adores this strange tradition.

People of this community give 21 various types of poisonous snakes as gifts to the groom. It is a tradition that can be followed only at the time of marriage. Some people may find it weird but it is a tradition that has been followed by the people for years.

If the father of the bride don't have 21 snakes, then he must borrow snakes from neighbors and relatives. Snakes play an important role in this community. After marriage, he returns all the borrowed snakes to their owners.

In fact, people organize a small ceremony, whenever a snake dies in the village, and serve food to other village members. Also, the owner of the snake has to shave his beard and mustache when his snake dies. These snakes charmers are now in danger because the forest department has banned keeping snakes at home.
