Unruly autos major traffic nuisance on Jamshedpur roads

JAMSHEDPUR: One of the major reasons for the traffic chaos in various parts of the Steel City are the unruly auto drivers. An estimate says that there are around 18,601 autos running on the city roads. Though there are designated auto stands in the city but the drivers love to park their three-wheelers on the road or pick up passengers by abruptly stopping in the middle on the road.

Sources said often these autos are the cause of fatal accidents on city roads. Sources allege that even the traffic police turn a blind eye to the whole issue. It was pointed out that near the Sakchi roundabout, autos are a menace. They just block the road which leads to traffic snarls and accidents.

Near the Sakchi eye hospital and dispensary the situation is the same, auto drivers block the road and pick up passengers.

Subash Chandra Jat, who took over the mantles of Jamshedpur city SP from Prabhat Kumar on June 28 as a part of departmental reshuffle, talking to TOI on Tuesday said action would be taken against those violating traffic laws.

Jat said a blue print in this connection is being prepared.

Meanwhile, Debjyoti Bose, a senior teacher in the city, lamented that during peak hours it is difficult to drive in Sakchi or Bistupur because of the autos. He said autos block the road near Bistupur Ram Mandir, Bank of Baroda and other places. Bose also agreed that city police does not initiate punitive action against the errant auto drivers which results in this everyday problem.

Shatarupa, a student of the Jamshedpur Womens College travels between Sonari and Bistupur every day, said autos pick up any number of passengers from anywhere. They have no stops. She said rough driving is another problem which is common among the drivers. She too agreed that police does nothing to check these unruly drivers.
