UoM research scholars protest delay in allotment of hostel rooms

Mysuru: Upset with the authorities of the University of Mysore (UoM) responsible for management of hostels for the delay in allotting rooms, research scholars housed on the varsity’s Manasagangothri campus assembled at the foot of Kuvempu’s statue on the premises on Saturday to draw the attention of the vice-chancellor to their plight.

In addition to the delay in allotment of rooms, the protesting scholars alleged that food was not being served at hostels.

Raising slogans against the varsity management, the protesters reeled off a litany of problems they faced at the varsity that included untidy rooms, insufficient drinking water and UoM’s failure to provide free laptops to researchers – both Mangalore University and Kannada University, Hampi are providing research scholars free laptops.

The protesters demanded extending scholarship for PhD students for five years, as was prescribed by the University Grants Commission, besides demanding a dedicated hostel facility for research scholars on the campus. The research scholars enjoined on the VC to provide separate study centres where they could immerse themselves in reading, and sought free bus passes.

UoM VC Prof G Hemantha Kumar met the protesting students, and assured them that their demands would be met.
