UP: 293 villages hit as three rivers flow above danger mark

LUCKNOW: Close to 1 lakh people across 293 villages of the state have been affected as three rivers are flowing above the danger mark .


Of the total, 67 villages in Barabanki, Ayodhya, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Bahraich and Sitapur have been marooned. Barabanki accounted for the most number of marooned villages, 28, while Gorakhpur followed next with 19.

The situation in Kushinagar appeared serious as all nine affected villages were marooned.


Relief commissioner Sanjay Goel has said that the Sharda river in Palliyan Kalan area of Lakhimpur Kheri was flowing 80cm above the danger mark while Ghaghra was flowing 9cm above the danger mark in Turtipar area of Ballia. The river Rapti is flowing 80cm above the danger mark in Gorakhpur and 5cm above in Shravasti.

Goel also said that all barrages in the state are safe and a system was in place to ensure immediate rescue and relief work.

“The situation is being monitored 24x7 through our integrated command and control room. Besides, 16 teams from national and state disaster management forces and Provincial Armed Constabulary have been deployed for rescue work while 636 flood outposts are coordinating relief work,” Goel said.

The officer also informed that medical and veterinary teams had been deployed to ensure that no human or animal suffers.

“Shelter homes for both humans and animals have been set up and ration kits and fodder distributed among those affected. We estimate that a population of 92,000 has been affected,” he said.
