UP tally crosses 53,000 with 2,151 new Covid-19 cases

LUCKNOW: A clear shift of the novel coronavirus pandemic from the Meerut division to Lucknow and Kanpur was recorded on Tuesday as the state tally crossed 53,000 mark. With 2,151 fresh cases in the past 24 hours, the total number of cases in UP reached 53,288.


According to Covid bulletin , while six districts of Meerut division, including Ghaziabad (79), Gautam Budh Nagar (52), Meerut (37), Bulandshahr (16), Hapur (9) and Baghpat (6), accounted for less than 10% of total new cases, Lucknow and Kanpur alone added over 20% of new cases with 212 and 230 entries respectively.

Other big cities, including Jhansi (151), Varanasi (95), Gorakhpur (67), Prayagraj (54) and Bareilly (47) also added about 20% of the new cases. Besides, Moradabad and Deoria recorded spikes of 90 and 74 cases respectively. Also more than two dozen districts saw Covid-19 case entries in double digits.

The official bulletin also recorded 37 deaths, taking the overall toll to 1,229. Among the 37 new deaths, eight were reported in Kanpur, taking the district total to 138, while five were recorded in Lucknow. In Moradabad, four succumbed to the Covid-19 infection, while Unnao recorded three deaths.

Two persons each lost their lives to the pandemic infection in Jhansi and Meerut, while Ghaziabad, Varanasi, Rampur, Bulandshahr, Bijnore, Prayagraj, Sant Kabir Nagar, Deoria, Hardoi, Kaushambi, Kannauj, Baghpat, Hamirpur saw one death each.

Health officials stated that as many as 1024 recoveries took the total number of discharged to 31,855 which is about 60% of the total burden. They also said that the total number of active infections in the state stood at 20204. In terms of active infections, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad account for over 31% cases. Sravasti has the lowest number of active cases – 17.
