Uttar Pradesh: Nurse transferred from govt health centre in Shamli after woman delivers baby in toilet

Lucknow: In a case of medical apathy reported from Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, a nurse at the government community health centre was transferred on Tuesday after a pregnant woman delivered her baby in the centre's toilet. The nurse has been accused of not attending to the patient.

Meanwhile, instead of taking stringent action against the accused nurse, the superintendent and medical officer have transferred her to another centre in the state.

The news agency PTI reported that the ailing woman delivered her child in the centre's toilet. The incident came to light on May 27 after the victim's father-in-law filed an official complaint accusing the hospital's staff of medical negligence.

Meanwhile, after the allegation was levelled a departmental enquiry was set up by the authorities to ascertain if there was any negligence or not. Reportedly, the departmental enquiry has confirmed negligence in the case by the hospital staff.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Sanjay Bhandarkar told news agency PTI that the departmental action was taken on the inquiry report conducted by Deputy CMO K P Singh. As an action taken against the accused, staff nurse Anjelina has been transferred and her increments for the year have been stopped.

Meanwhile, warning letters were issued to Superintendent Ramesh Chandra and medical officer Manjit Kaur added CMO.

Several such cases of medical apathy have come to the fore in Uttar Pradesh in past months. In a similar case reported from Shamli district, a woman was taken to a district hospital on a cart after the hospital authorities denied her an ambulance. The incident came to light on June 21. A relative of the patient said that when he called the district hospital and asked them to provide an ambulance, they allegedly told him that there was no one at the hospital. However, the woman was then rushed to the hospital on a cart.
