Uttara Kannada (Karnataka) Election 2019: Will JD(S) be able to wrest the seat from BJP?

Bengaluru: The polling in Uttara Kannada took place on April 23 in the third phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the seat twice since 2009.

This time, the seat saw the poll contest between sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament candidate Anant Kumar Hegde and Anand Asnotikar of HD Devegowda led Janata Dal (Secular).

Previously in 2014  Anant Kumar Hegde of BJP having bagged 546939 (54.64 per cent) votes beat Prashant R Deshpande who secured 406239 (40.58 per cent)  by an impressive margin of 1,50,000 votes.

In 2014 election, the Uttara Kannada seat had 1,450,599 registered electors out of which number of men voters was 742,865 while the women voters were 707,734. The polling which took place on April 17, 2014, witnessed the total voter turnout of 69.04 per cent. In addition to that, while the men voter turnout was registered as  73.75 per cent the voter turnout of women was 69.27 per cent.

The election had 1,558,749 registered electors out of which the number of men voters was 807,076 while the number of women voters was 751,673. The poll which took place on April 17, 2014, witnessed the total voter turnout of 71.59 per cent. In addition to that the men voter turnout was 70.21 per cent and women voter turnout was 67.75 per cent.

The Parliamentary seat of Uttara Kannada comprises eight state Assembly segments namely – Khanpur, Kittur, Haliyal, Karwar, Kumta, Bhatkal, Sirsi and Yellapur.

Elections for the 28 Lok Sabha seats took place in the two phases on April 18 and April 23. However, nationwide, with the completion of seven-phase elections on May 19  results of all the 543 constituencies will be announced on May 23.
