Vadodara: Baby crocodile crawls into house near Vishwamitri

VADODARA: When Nitesh Yadav saw something crawling near the bed in his house in Sayajigunj near Vishwamitri River on Thursday, he thought it must be a rodent. But when he took a closer look, it turned out to be a baby crocodile . Yadav and his family were shocked. They soon called up volunteers of Wildlife Rescue Trust (WRT).

“When I saw the baby crocodile I was taken aback. We have seen reptiles in the river and out on the road. But never has any reptile crawled into our home,” Yadav said. The two-and-half-foot crocodile ventured out of Vishwamitri River that is home to hundreds of reptiles. It must have entered the house in Parshuram Bhatta located right next to the river through an open door.

The crocodile slipped under a bed kept in the main room and when people gathered to catch a glimpse of it, the reptile tried to slip away. “We reached the spot and rescued the crocodile. It was bit tough as there was little space in the house and many people had gathered there out of curiosity. A baby crocodile too can bite really hard,” said a volunteer of WRT.

The crocodile was later handed over to the forest department. The river stretch where the colony is located is home to lot of crocodiles that often rest on the banks during the day time. The number of baby crocodiles increase in the river during monsoons when the eggs laid by the reptiles hatch.
