Vadodara: Green corridor helps save 18-year-old college girl's life

Vadodara: On Saturday afternoon, all traffic signals on the 10-kilometre stretch between Manjalpur and Harni airport remained red for all, except for an ambulance that whizzed past in top speed, leaving onlookers curious about the reason behind the sudden barricade.

The city police had created a green corridor to lave the limb of 18-year-old college girl Kinni Patel who had met with an accident when their tourist bus carrying 25 people overturned near Statue of Unity (SoU).

Kinni, daughter of a veterinary doctor in Harni and a first-year student of MB Patel College in Anand, was in immense pain as her right arm got severed from the shoulder in the accident.

The tourists insisted on going to the SoU first and so, Arvind Nayak, the bus driver, took a U-turn. However, he hit a biker, while another bus which was following it rammed it from behind.

Kinni was brought to Global Hospital, Manjalpur at about 1.30 pm. After doctors there gave her first-aid, they realized she required specialized treatment and needed to be sent to Apollo Hospital in Ahmedabad urgently. Knowing the seriousness of the matter, police immediately created a green corridor on the 10km stretch between Global Hospital in Manjalpur and the airport for her to be airlifted to Ahmedabad. On normal days, covering this stretch takes at least 30 minutes.

“As time was running out, the district administration contacted the police to create a green corridor immediately,” said Mahipalsinh Chudasama, Vadodara deputy collector. The police immediately prepared a plan and decided the route to reach the airport at the earliest and so chose the Rajmahal Road to Jail Road, Sayajibaug Road, Fatehgunj route to reach the airport via Amitnagar Circle.

Soon, a message was sent out to all the traffic cops posted at the crossroads on the entire stretch and signals were kept red. The ambulance began it journey at 3.45 pm and reached the airport at 3.56pm in 11 minutes flat. Kinni was airlifted at 4.08pm by a helicopter got from Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL), said district collector Shalini Agrawal.

Kinni’s brother Vasu Patel, and their father, too, were in the same bus. “Kinni was in the window seat and took a severe hit on her hand. My father also suffered injuries,” he told TOI.
