Varalakshmi Vratam significance

Married women perform the Varalakshmi Vratam by keeping a fast and tying a sacred thread on their right wrist to pray for the well-being of their family. They also seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for gaining material comforts and luxuries on this day. Since Goddess Lakshmi represents wealth, this day is significant for those who seek a blissful life and worldly pleasures. Therefore, on this day, devotees worship Varalakshmi, who is believed to have emerged from the cosmic ocean while churning it. This refers to the Samudra Manthan of the Kshira Sagara between the Devas and the Asuras.

It is said that by worshipping Varalakshmi, one can seek the blessings of the Ashta Lakshmi - or the Eight Goddesses who represent various aspects of life. They are as following:

  • Aadi or Mahalakshmi Lakshmi (the one who propels spiritual learnings or the one who protects)
  • Dhana Lakshmi (the Goddess of wealth)
  • Dhairya Lakshmi (the Goddess of courage)
  • Sowbhagya Lakshmi (the Goddess of good fortune)
  • Vijaya Lakshmi (the Goddess of victory)
  • Dhanya Lakshmi (the Goddess of food)
  • Santana Lakshmi (the Goddess of fertility)
  • Vidya Lakshmi (the Goddess of wisdom)
  • Thus, by observing a vratam on this day, women seek the blessings of the Ashta Lakshmi for spiritual and material prosperity.
