Vasai locals told not to rent flats to illegal immigrants

MUMBAI: The police have begun cracking down on owners of houses in Vasai who illegally rent out their flats to Nigerians and Bangladeshis.

Owners of flats in Palghar district , especially the Vasai-Virar belt, have been directed to not rent flats to foreigners without intimating the police.

A police officer said that no leave and licence agreement is made, nor do flat owners insist on documents from tenants.

For the next two months, owners of flats, hotels, shops as also property dealers have been directed to follow proper process before renting out accommodation or doing business with Nigerians and Bangladeshis. An existing rule to this effect has been invoked by the collector of Palghar district.

The police said that Nigerians often deal in narcotic drugs while illegal Bangladeshi immigrants work as labourers and domestic help, especially in Vasai. "Most of these illegal foreign tenants are in Nalasopara and Virar ," said the officer.

The police said that those who do not adhere to rules would be booked.
