Vejalpur left without cuppa tea or food

Residents of Vejalpur woke up to a nightmare on Tuesday morning when they discovered that PNG gas supply to their kitchens had stopped. The supply was restored only in the evening and thousands of families in Vejalpur and Makarba had to do without their morning cup of tea or lunch.

The unexpected development took place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday when workers of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), who were digging a road near Shrinandnagar II in Makarba, broke open a gas pipeline of Adani Gas Limited (AGL).

The company was quick to disable the supply for restoration, but it rendered thousands of families without cooking gas till evening.

Most people residing in the area had to leave for work without breakfast while their families had to order online food and munch on packaged snacks for lunch. To add to their woes, most Adani gas consumers have surrendered their LPG cylinders, leaving them with no alternate means of running their kitchens.

Chandrika Padhiyar (40), a resident of Krishnanagar, said, “We surrendered the cooking-gas cylinders after getting PNG connection. I could not even make tea for our family of four. I urged my neighbours to make our morning tea, after which my husband left for work. We got wafers and other packaged food items for lunch.”

Shivkumar Keradoo, a resident of Venus Parkland, and his seven family members had no alternative but to order food online after their gas supply stopped. “We bought breakfast and morning tea from outside. We also spent Rs 1,300 on restaurant food for lunch.” Sharda Darji, a resident of Janta Market Society, said, “We were hopeful that the supply would be restored in matter of hours giving us chance of cooking a hasty lunch. Hence, I did not even order online food. I wish we had retained our gas cylinders that can come handy during such times.”

Adani Gas Limited spokesperson Roy Paul said, “There was some digging work undertaken by the AMC in the which Adani pipeline got damaged. We initiated the repair work immediately and 100% supply has been restored.” Dinesh Baranda, Additional City Engineer, South West Zone (AMC), said, “We were undertaking cesspit work late in the night, during which the JCB punctured the Adani gas pipeline. It was duly attended to.”
