Vellore: Nalini Sriharan back in prison after 51-day parole

VELLORE: After the expiry of her 51-day parole, Nalini Sriharan — a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case — went back to the Vellore Special Prison for Women on Sunday evening.

Nalini had been staying at the house of Dravida Iyakka Tamizhar Peravai state deputy general secretary Singarayar at Sathuvachari.

She was given a tearful farewell by her family members, including her mother Padma, sister Kalyani and brother Backiyanathan. She was escorted to the prison under tight security.

Pugalenthi, Nalini’s advocate, said, “Harithara, daughter of Nalini and Murugan alias Sriharan (also a convict in the same case) was born in Vellore prison and was raised behind bars for at least two years. Later she migrated to Europe. Nalini had applied for a six-month parole to solmenize Harithara’s marriage.”

The Madras high court gave her a 30-day parole from July 25 . Later she sought an extension from the high court, and subsequently her parole was extended by another 21 days, which came to an end on Sunday .

She was hopeful of arranging a marriage for her daughter, but she returned back to the prison disappointed as the wedding could not be finalized, Pugalenthi said.
