Vijayawada: After death of boy, school MD arrested

Tirupati: Following the death of a 6-year-old boy who fell into a hot vessel of sambar in his school at Panyam in Kurnool, district authorities and cops have decided to crack the whip against private schools operating without recognition and permissions. The boy, Purushotham Reddy, a UKG student of Vidya Niketan school, succumbed to severe burn injuries on Wednesday evening.

Police have lodged a case under section 304 A of IPC (causing death due to negligence) against Vidya Niketan school management after receiving a complaint from the boy’s parents Shyam Sundar Reddy and Kalpana.

Managing director of the school Vijayakumar Reddy and correspondent Naga Malleswar Reddy were arrested and were in police custody. According to helpers at the school, the students were being assembled during the lunch hour when the boy broke away from the queue and started running. The sambar vessel was being moved to the dining hall and the deceased slipped and fell into it.

Following the instructions of the district collector, district educational officer Sai Ram launched a probe into the incident.

Speaking to reporters, Sai Ram observed that Vidya Niketan did not have the requisite permission to operate a residential school. Yet, there were 1,300 resident students. The school has an overall student strength of 2,001.

“We have been serving notices to the school management for four years but they have not responded at all. We will suspend the recognition of the school. Show cause notices have already been served to the school management,” he added.
