Vijayawada residents look to ice apples, coconut water to beat the heat

VIJAYAWADA: With temperatures touching the 45°C mark, citizens are searching for food that will keep their body hydrated in the summer . Consequently, the demand for ice apples and coconut water is increasing across the city.

The number of cases related to dehydration and sunstroke reached around 450 cases in the last ten days.

Owing to campaigns by several voluntary organisations and doctors, the demand for aerated beverages and artificially flavoured drinks has gone down. People increasingly prefer to consume tender coconut water and ice apple to beat the heat.

City-based general physician, Dr V Bhagyaraj said,“It is very important to maintain the levels of salts in the body. Dehydration is a major problem during summer and the problems become worse if we drink carbonated beverages with artificial flavours. We are conducting awareness camps on health benefits of fruits like ice apples fruits and coconut water which help to stay hydrated and help the body flush out toxins.”

Farmers from Mylavaram, Nuzividu, Nandigama, Kakaluru are being found selling fresh ice apples and coconuts on the city roads.
