Village's water scarcity to end soon

Alappuzha: ‘I am for Alleppey’, the initiative under Alappuzha sub-collector Krishna Teja and Rotary Club of Alleppey East have come forward for helping the Kuppapuram villagers, who are reeling under acute shortage of potable water, in Kainakary grama panchayat of Kuttanad .

On Wednesday, TOI had published the report about the water crisis of Kuppapuram villagers after the RO plant set up 20 years ago by Rotary Club of Alleppey East stopped functioning two months ago due to technical issues of the plant.

Sub-collector Krishna Teja and his ‘I am for Alleppey’- a social media campaign of Teja for rebuilding the flood hit Alappuzha- has come forward for helping the Kuppapuram villagers, upon reading the report. He also sent a team for visiting the defunct plant on Wednesday and collected the details. The help of Rotary Club of Alleppey East and Kainakary grama panchayat president was sought for doing the repair works and operating the RO plant.

“The Rotary club office bearers have agreed to do the repair works of the plant soon and grama panchayat authorities have decided to deploy a Kudumbashree team for operating the plant. Apart from it, Rural Literacy and Health Programme (RLHP), an NGO in Mysore, has come forward for setting up two water-harvesting plants and repair works of the damaged water pipelines at Kuppapuram through I am for Alleppey,’’ he said.

Rotary Club of Alleppey East president Tijo Alex said that they will soon take steps for repairing the RO plant and after completing the repair works, they will hand it over to grama panchayat authorities for operating it.

Kainakary grama panchayat president Sheela Sajeev said that they sought the help of NGOs to repair the RO plant at Naduthuruthu and discussions are on.

The potable water shortage had turned severe in Kuppapuram village after the RO plant that could give at least 2,000 litre water per day became defunct two months ago. So the people of these water-locked villages were requesting the authorities concerned to take immediate steps for providing potable water to them. The RO plant that was set up for these villagers at Naduthuruthu five years ago had stopped functioning on its inaugural day. However, now the authorities concerned have interfered in the issue and promised the villagers that they would address their water crisis at the earliest.
