Waste collection to resume in Palakkad

Palakkad: The two-month-old waste collection issue in Palakkad municipality has finally been resolved thanks to the intervention of the state government.

A meeting convened by minister for local self-government A C Moideen and minister for SC and ST welfare A K Balan on Thursday decided to form a monitoring committee with representatives from the municipality and Kodumbu grama panchayat to monitor the collection and processing of waste.

The committee will meet on Saturday to take steps to resume waste collection.

“Now, only degradable waste will be collected and sent to Kodumbu processing plant for making fertilizer,” said municipality vice-chairman C Krishnakumar.

Government has promised to sanction Rs 2 crore for the modernization project of the existing waste processing plant. This could increase the capacity of processing from the existing 10 tonnes per day to 15 tonnes per day.

Krishnakumar said plastic waste collected will be given to Clean Kerala Company for processing. “The waste generated after the August floods was not removed from Palakkad and now it will be removed by the Clean Kerala Company,” he said.

He said that bio-binds to process one to two tonnes waste daily will be provided by the Kerala Suchitwa Mission.
