West Bengal's Malda turns unrest after a scuffle between police and locals

Kolkata: West Bengal’s Malda turned into a warzone over scuffle between police and locals, who allegedly attacked the policemen and vandalised police vehicles, late last midnight over a road accident after police refused to take complaints. Twenty people have been arrested in this connection.

An accident took place on Sunday when one person died, which enraged the locals of Ratua area’s Mahanandatola. They went to Ratua police station to file a complaint about the accident, which they refused to register. The accident victim Parimal Mandol’s body was returned to the family last evening. The locals again went to the police station, demanding the development of traffic in the area. “When police refused again, local gheraoed (gathered around) police station,” a local said.

The gherao continued for hours, after which locals and police got engaged in a scuffle. A police vehicle was vandalised. When police lathi-charged to disperse the angry mob, people pelted stones at police officers. It is learnt that police lobbed tear gas shells, lathi-charged and fired two rounds of bullets. Though one person had bore bullet injuries, police denied firing two rounds. One person allegedly is hospitalised with bullet injuries.

A huge police force has cordoned off the area and RAF has been deployed. The area remains tense after the incident. Many villagers have absconded. The arrested people have been produced in court today.
