Wide road to clear Goregaon bottleneck soon

MUMBAI: Motorists traveling from Link Road in Goregaon can expect some ease in traffic movement as the BMC plans to widen a stretch of the road that has become a major bottleneck, as less than five metres of the nine-metre road was usable. Local civic representatives said that since it is a busy junction, they had received frequent complaints from motorists.

Earlier this week, the civic body started widening work along the stretch that is commonly referred to as the Vibgyor school junction as well.

The BMC had undertaken nullah-widening work on the road a few years ago, but it was left incomplete and a wall was constructed next to it. Goregaon corporator Srikala Pillai said that she had been pursuing it with the civic body since 2017 to ensure that the wall built in the middle of the road is removed so a road can be laid out and used to its full capacity. "However, the administration kept giving me reasons like lack of funds. There was also lack of coordination between the departments. After several follow-ups, the civic body agreed to undertake the widening work. This would mean huge relief," said Pillai.

Another corporator from the area, Sandeep Patel, said another problem was Metro work, due to which a portion of the road was out of bounds for motorists. "In addition, the gap in the road was a hurdle for those traveling from Jogeshwari towards Malad . We were requesting BMC to accelerate the work. There would also be instances of garbage strewn on the road by slum residents in the locality. We are happy that the work on the road has finally begun," said Patel.
