Woman jumps before train with 4 children near Jehanabad

Patna: A 35-year-old woman, along with her four minor children, jumped in front of a running train near Jehanabad railway station on Patna-Gaya section of East Central Railway (ECR) on Sunday morning. The woman and her three children were run over by the train while one was seriously injured and undergoing treatment at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Patna superintendent of rail police (SRP) Sujeet Kumar said the Jehanabad government railway police (GRP) received information around 6am that a woman and four minor children were lying unconscious on the railway track. A police team led by station house officer (SHO) of Jehanabad GRP, Krishna Kumar, rushed to the site only to find the woman and her three children dead.

However, the woman’s three-year-old son was alive. He was rushed to the local hospital from where he was referred to the PMCH. The SRP said the condition of the three-year-old child was stated to be out of danger. “A police team is camping at the PMCH to look after his treatment,” Sujeet told this newspaper over phone.

SHO Krishna said the woman and her three children could not be identified yet. The site is about 3km north of Jehanabad railway station. The bodies were later sent to the Jehanabad sadar hospital for postmortem.

The SHO said it couldn’t be immediately known how the woman reached there and jumped in front of the running train. “But one thing is sure that she had reached the spot only a few minutes before the incident. Prima facie it appeared that family feud compelled the woman to take the extreme step,” he added.

A senior railway official said some local residents had spotted the mutilated bodies lying on the railway track around 5am and informed the Jehanabad station manager, who subsequently alerted the GRP personnel.

A case of unnatural death (UD) has been lodged with the Jehanabad GRP in this connection.
