Woman killed, 11 hurt after live wire falls on bus in Alwar

Jaipur/Alwar: A 60-year-old woman was killed and 11 others critically injured after a high-tension wire fell over a bus in Bharatpur on Wednesday morning.

The mishap took place near Gulpara area of Bharatpur under Sikri police station area, when passengers were boarding the private bus at 10am. “The live wire fell over the bus and its tyres soon went up in flames, but a person standing nearby took out a pipe to immediately remove the wire,” said district SP Haider Ali Zaidi.

The victim has been identified as Shanti Devi, who was a resident of Deeg. The 11 injured are currently undergoing treatment for burn injuries. Bharatpur district collector has ordered an inquiry into the case. The eye witnesses told the police that the bus was parked near a transformer, when a cable fell over it.

The incident triggered panic among passengers, with many leaping out of the windows while others were screaming for help. The engineers from the electricity department were sent to the spot to disconnect power supply so that rescue operations could resume. The local villagers alleged that rescue teams arrived very late and they had to take out the stranded passengers.

“Some people have sustained major burn injuries and they are being treated at a nearby hospital in Alwar. There were about 20 passengers inside the bus when the mishap took place,” an official told TOI.
