Woman run over by bus on BRTS track

Ahmedabad: Yet another fatal accident on the BRTS corridor was reported on Monday; a 38-year-old woman died after being run over by an AMTS (Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service) bus, near Maninagar railway station.

This is the seventh fatal accident on BRTS tracks this year. The deceased was identified as Badami Narayan Vagariya, a native of Udaipur, who lived on the footpath besides the Maninagar railway station and sold balloons.

According to the FIR registered with J traffic police, Vagariya was crossing the BRTS track when the bus hit her. An autorickshaw driver heard the screeching of brakes and then saw the woman in a pool of blood.

Other balloon sellers, her relatives, ran towards Vagariya and found her unconscious, the FIR states. J traffic police inspector Amarsinh Chauhan said that the woman was taken to a private hospital. When her condition deteriorated, she was moved to LG Hospital where she died on Tuesday morning.

Police registered a case of negligent driving causing death against the driver of bus No. 32, which plies between Butbhawani and Sahyadri bungalows. The driver had run away. Chauhan said the woman was crossing the track at a spot where there is no zebra crossing.

On May 29 this year, an elderly couple, Taru Parikh and Ramesh Parikh, were hit by a speeding BRTS bus on the BRTS track in Nehrunagar.

The man died and the woman suffered severe injuries. Police officials had written to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), stating that the accident occurred because there are no zebra crossings along the track.
