Woman thrashed after child-lifting rumour in UP's Gonda

FAIZABAD: Nine persons have been arrested in Gonda district after a video went viral showing a mob beating up a woman tied to a tree on suspicions of child-lifting.

The woman, identified as Noor Jahan, is being treated for critical injuries in hospital, police said.

The incident took place in Raheli village under Nawabganj police station two days ago.

Some people saw the woman loitering in the village and the rumour spread that she was there to steal babies.

"A group of villagers got hold of her, tied her to a tree and began beating her up. Someone informed police. A team reached the spot and rescued her," said Gonda ASP Mahendra Kumar.

The victim, who is in and out of consciousness, managed to tell police she is a resident of Raheli's neighbouring Shahpur village after which her family was informed.

Nawabganj station house officer Bhanu Pratap Singh said an FIR was lodged based on the complaint of Noor's father Abid Ali. "Nine persons have been arrested for the lynching attempt," he added.
