Youth Congress eyes five LS seats out of 26 in State

Gujarat Youth Congress has requested party leadership to give tickets to its young Turks in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The matter was discussed during a meeting held at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan in Ahmedabad on Friday to plan poll strategy. The seats eyed by Youth Congress are Jamnagar, Amreli, Bharuch, Banaskantha and Surendranagar.

During the meeting held in presence of Joint Secretary of Indian Youth Congress Krishna Allavaru and Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee President Amit Chavda, the local youth leaders said their members hold potential to win election. Sources said Allavaru was told that Youth Congress members are more loyal to the party than some of the senior leaders many of whom deserted the party recently and joined BJP.

Being loyal, they would be able to give better leadership to the party. Party sources said considering the new development, the screening committee meeting in Delhi on Saturday to finalise names for 22 LS seats in Gujarat has been postponed. Names for four of the 26 LS seats in Gujarat were declared earlier by the party.

National Youth Congress spokesperson Parthiv Raj said, “We feel some of our youth leaders are capable to contest, however, we will accept whatever the central leadership decides. Today’s big names like Amit Chavda, Paresh Dhanani, Ahmed Patel, Ambika Soni and many others started out with Youth Congress.”

Names of youth leaders Gulabsinh Rajput (Banaskantha), Harpal Chudasma (Surendranagar), Sherkhan Pathan (Bharuch), Hemant Khava (Jamnagar) and Jeni Thummar (Amreli) were discussed at the meeting as potential candidates. Name of Hemant Khava is also part of panel of names suggested for Jamnagar in case Hardik Patel is not fielded from there. Similarly, Jeni Thummar’s name is also part of the panel from Amreli along with those of Paresh Dhanani, Pratap Dudhat and Kokila Kakadiya.
