21 child marriages prevented in Sabarkantha on Akha Trij

PALANPUR: At least 21 child marriages were prevented by the Sabarkantha child marriage prevention officer cum social defense officer (DCPO) on Tuesday. The marriages were organised by members of Thakor community on occasion of Akha Trij , which according to Hindu tradition , is considered auspicious for marriages.

Acting on a tip off, the Sabarkantha DCPO Mahesh Patel and his team reached venue of a mass marriage event being held in Malpur village of Vadali taluka. The marriages were organised by Paschim Vibhag Thakor Samaj.

On scrutiny, it was found that of the 31 couples, 21 were under-age.
