4 vehicles damaged in Margao as winds blow roof off bldg

Colva: A family going for Sunday mass in Margao had a close escape after the roof of a building crashed on their car due to strong winds . Three other cars parked at the Carmelite Monastery were also partially damaged.

Around 9.15am on Sunday, when people were attending mass at Carmelite Monastery, a sudden burst of high speed winds took along the roof of a building opposite the monastery.

The impact of the winds was such that rafters and fibre sheets along with ceiling fans attached to it came flying down on the road between the building and the monastery.

Former teacher of St Pius X High School, Orlim Milena Fernandes, who along with her family was travelling in their car told TOI that they were in the middle of the road when the roof came flying down from the terrace of a three-floor building and part of it crashed on their car. The top of the car was dented and the wind shield was shattered.

“We did not know what was happening, it was other vehicle owners that came to our rescue and removed the rafters and fibre sheets from our car,” Fernandes said.

Meanwhile, fire personnel in Margao informed that they have attended to more than 25 calls of road blocks and tree felling in Salcete.
