ABVP sweeps Delhi University polls ahead of crucial Delhi assembly elections

RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarhti Parishad has swept this year’s students’ body elections in Delhi University by winning three out of four posts. The saffron outfit won the posts of President, Vice President and Joint Secretary, while the Congress-backed NSUI could only win the post of Secretary.

ABVP’s Akshit Dahiya emerged victorious for the post of President as he defeated NSUI’s Chetna Tyagi by over 19,000 votes.

His party colleague Pradeep Tanwar won the Vice President’s post with a margin of over 8,000 votes. Shivangi Kharwal secured the Joint Secretary’s post after she emerged victorious by a margin of nearly 3,000 votes.

The lone seat won by the NSUI went to Ashish Lamba, who won the DUSU’s Secretary’s post by defeating ABVP’s Yogi Rathee by nearly 2,000 votes.

This year’s election had seen 39.90 percent voter turnout, which was significantly lower than the last year’s turnout of 44.46 percent.

Last year too, the ABVP had won three out of four seats while one post had gone to the NSUI.

There were allegations of EVM malfunctioning in this year’s elections.

The ABVP’s impressive showing in the students’ body polls comes just months after the BJP won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi. The national capital goes to assembly polls in February next year. It remains to be seen if this will have any impact on the saffron parties chances in the assembly elections too.
