Guwahati: Artificial intelligence and robotics has been introduced as a vocational subject in schools affiliated to the state board in Assam, while the weight given to practical marks in vocational papers has been increased to 50% from the 2024-25 academic session.

A notification issued by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (Seba) recently, said a decision has been taken to introduce a new elective subject to teach AI and robotics in Class IX from this academic session and in Class X from the next one (2025-2026).

The PDF version of the textbook is available on the official website of SEBA. The book can also be obtained from the open market, Seba officials said.

The notification said the practical marks of all vocational subjects — AI and robotics, garment designing, woodcraft, music, dance, yoga and physical education, fine arts, home science, weaving and textile design, besides subjects under NSQF (National Skills Qualifications Framework) shall be 50% from the 2024-2025 academic session itself. However, the practical marks for computer science and commerce will be 30%, as it was before.

Further, the system of conducting practical examinations at the notified exam centres has also been done away with altogether.
