Allahabad University campus witness massive protest on hostel eviction issue

PRAYAGRAJ: After a long lull on the campus, in terms of protest or agitation by the students leaders of Allahabad University , large number of student leaders staged their protest at the VC's office on Thursday. The agitation was on the issue of asking the inmates to vacate the hostels .

Since morning, large number of students and student leaders started assembling at the union Hall of Arts campus of AU.

The news, regarding the inmates being asked to vacate all the hostels with immediate effect failing which they would be forcibly evicted, spread like wildfire among the student fraternity.

Showing solidarity with all the student, staying at various hostels of AU and that of the trust, the student leader arrived at the VC’s office at around 11 am, on Thursday. Following the concept of social distancing and holding placards against the decision of the varsity authorities, they first took out a procession on the campus and later sat for dharna near the VC’s office. Shouting slogans against the VC and AU administration , the student leaders demanded that the varsity administration should take back their decision.

Later, the chief proctor and CO Colonelganj tried to persuade them that this decision has been taken in the larger interest of the student community in view of fast spreading coronavirus in the city.

“They have to understand that there were many cases wherein students were coming back to their rooms without telling us or the district administration whereas ideally they should be quarantined, this left us with no other option but the evacuate the entire hostel and the same would be sanitised and inmates would again be called when AU reopens”, said the chief proctor of AU, Prof RK Upadhayay .

Former vice president of AUSU, Akhilesh Yadav said, “at a time when the government is telling everyone to stay indoors, the varsity administration has decided to throw away the students who have come to the city to study and thinks that varsity administration is their guardian”.

Similarly in another agitation, student leader protested against the decision of the varsity administration to hold exams of final year students from August 17 onwards. Led by Ajay Yadav ‘samrat’, they have submitted a memorandum to the office of AU’s Visitor (President of the country) opposing the decision of the UGC and AU administration to hold the exams in view of covid-19 pandemic.
