AMC damages Adani Gas pipeline in Vejalpur

AHMEDABAD: Friday morning was chaotic for several households in the Makarba, Vejalpur, Sarkhej and Juhapura areas of Ahmedabad, as they couldn’t even make themselves a cup of tea due to disruption in Adani’s piped natural gas (PNG) supply.

The cause of the disruption was an Adani Gas pipeline being damaged during maintenance work by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) near Shrinandnagar II in Vejalpur .

AMC officials said that the incident occurred when work on a catch pit was going on.

The affected consumers learned about the situationonly in the morning, after inquiring with the Adani Gas customer care.

An AMC official said, “During a JCB was involved in digging work, it hit the Adani pipeline and caused a leak. The contractor will have to Adani the cost of the repairs, adding that contractors have been told to be more careful.”

“Early this morning, damage was reported to Adani Gas’ PNG network in Vejalpur, it was caused while work was being carried out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Repairs were begun immediately and supply was restored by 5pm,” an Adani Gas spokesperson said. The incident irked several affected consumers. “It is annoying to see the civic body take up digging work be it for roads or anything else, just ahead of the monsoon. This incident clearly reflects that no safety measures were taken during the process and a major accident could have occurred,” said Dharti Parikh, a resident of Makarba Road.

“As it is Ramzan, we fast through the day. Normally we cook in the morning and because by the end of the day are exhausted, especially with summer and having gone without food and water. As the gas supply was out, we ended up ordering our iftaari from outside,” said Ali Abbas Marchawala, a resident of Sarkhej.
