#AmphanEffect: Boats and roof flung like matchsticks at floating market

In devastating Amphan , one of Kolkata’s showpiece projects by the state government – Patuli floating market – is damaged beyond repair. In 2018, when the state government inaugurated the project, there were 214 boats, after the storm more than 90% of the boats were gone.

Even though all the hawkers were asked to leave, two security guards were on duty at the market on the Wednesday.

They share some horrific account.

From 3 pm heavy wind started flowing from the north east side of the lake. Since the west side of the lake is guarded with tall buildings, we were partly assured that nothing would happen. However, from around 4 pm, the wind power increased and after a few hours I saw that the boats were roiling vigorously. Soon, one of the boats roof was flew away and a few minutes after that it crashed with one of the walking paths on the lake and drowned. Then one by one, most of the boats met the same fate. I couldn’t want it and praying to the gods from the concrete security room. I will never be able to forget the sound and the power of the wind, I experienced.
