Andhra Pradesh: DRI seizes 1137 kg cannabis worth Rs 2 cr in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: In yet another big haul, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized over 1137 kg of cannabis worth over Rs. 2 crores in Vijayawada. The DRI has also arrested one person in this regard.

The seizure came following a tip-off to DRI a cargo vehicle carrying a big cache of cannabis in Vijayawada.

The officials intercepted the vehicle and seized the contraband worth Rs 2 cr.

According to a report in ANI, the DRI interrogated the driver of the vehicle after which he spilled the beans about the smuggling of the drugs.

The driver told DRI that the ganja was being transported illegally from Narsipatnam to Hyderabad under the cover of a bulk cargo of Phospho Gypsum. The agency gas registered the case and a further probe is underway.

On May 5, Police in Karnatak's Bidar district seized 650kg of cannabis and arrested two persons. The value of the contraband was estimated to be Rs 35 lakh.

Earlier in a major crackdown, the coastal security police in Chennai in neighbouring Tamil Nadu seized around 34 kilograms of ganja. The contraband was being sent to Sri Lanka via sea. The police had also arrested a man in connection with the case. The arrest was made at the Arcotthurai coast. The contraband was being transported in two bags. The accused was waiting for a boat when he was arrested.

 On March 27 this year, as many as 10 drug peddlers were arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir police from the Samba district. The police had also confiscated 35 kg cannabis and 81 kg poppy from their possession.
