Andhra Pradesh: Kadapa dump yards to be turned into parks

TIRUPATI: The Ukkayapalli dumping yard on the outskirts of Kadapa city will soon become a full-fledged park by infusing funds to the tune of Rs 23 crore.

National Green Tribunal ( NGT ) state level committee chairperson Justice B Seshasayana Reddy visited Ukkayapalli and Maddimadugu dumping yards on Wednesday to take a look at the way garbage is being disposed.

He announced that the garbage would be scientifically dumped in the Maddimadugu yard on Rayachoty road, while the Ukkayapalli yard would be developed in a systematic manner, by incorporating walking track, solar lighting system, children’s play area and resting place for the citizens. “The yard that was used to dump garbage will soon be closed down. It will be converted into a park and will be again handed over to the civic body for maintenance”, he said.

He added that the Maddimadugu dumping yard will get solar lighting, internal roads and water supply with Rs 3.09 crore funded from Swachh Andhra Corporation. Kadapa city is churning out garbage to the tune of 156 tonnes every day, which will be disposed in a scientific manner in a 99-acre yard, by segregating dry and wet waste.

Steps will be taken to ensure that nothing else entered this site, barring municipal solid waste. “The practice of burning the waste should be done away with”, said Justice Reddy. Municipal commissioner Lavanna, AP Pollution Control Board senior environmental engineer Subba Rao and Janardhan Rao, Kadapa regional environmental engineer Javed Basha, were among others present.
