Bangladeshi cattle smuggler shot dead in Karimganj

SILCHAR: A Bangladeshi cattle smuggler was shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Fulkandi village in Assam 's Karimganj district, situated along the India-Bangladesh border, early on Saturday morning.

Karimganj deputy superintendent of police Sudhanya Suklabaidya said a group of 10-12 Bangladeshi cattle smugglers were trying to enter into Indian territory through a tear in the barbed wire fencing on the border.

When BSF personnel tried to stop them, all the cattle smugglers except one managed to escape. The border guards then opened fire, which led to the death of one of the cattle smugglers.

The deceased has been identified as Abrul Rauf, a resident of Sylhet division of Bangladesh . A sharp weapon which might have been used to cut the fence and a Bangladeshi mobile phone have been recovered from his possession.

After BSF handed over Rauf's body to police, the cops sent it to Karimganj civil hospital for postmortem. An police officer said the body has been kept at the morgue of the hospital. If the Bangladeshi government claims the body, it would be handed over to them during the flag meeting between both the countries, he said, adding that the body would otherwise be cremated after 72 hours.
