Barfis spiked with talcum powder in Gandhinagar

Ahmedabad: Multiple teams of the state government’s Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) on Friday carried out searches at three production units in Gandhinagar district and caught them using talcum powder to make barfis.

FDCA served notices to all three units and sent samples of the sweets to the central food laboratory in Vadodara.
According to FDCA officials, based on a tip-off, they carried out raids at Jay Ma Kailadevi Milk Food Products, Ma Rahanawali Milk Food Products, and Sai Products in Valad and Jethipur villages. The units were manufacturing the sweet for a specific brand. In all, 4,106kg stock was seized from the locations; their market price is Rs 5.58 lakh.

Dr H G Koshiya, the FDCA commissioner, said that 547kg of the adulterant white powder was seized from these locations. “The substance has been identified as fine-grain talcum powder which was mixed with the raw materials to provide uniform colour and to reduce costs,” he said. “Investigation is under way to determine how much stock has been delivered to the market.”

FDCA officials said that all three units had food production licences from the state. Action will be initiated to cancel them, officials said.
