Bhopal: Injured sloth bear on way to Van Vihar for treatment dies

BHOPAL: An injured bear which was being brought from Shahdol district to Van Vihar National Park for treatment died before receiving medical care on Wednesday.


Forest officials said that the bear had climbed up a tree in search of honey. Due to his weight, the branch gave in and the fall broke the bear's spine causing grievous injury.

A team of officials tranquilised the bear and rescued him from Bairohi area in Shahdol. He was brought to Van Vihar for further treatment and care, said officials.

The bear was around six to seven years of age and was severely injured, due to which he died before he could reach the national park.

Assistant director of Van Vihar AK Jain said, "As per preliminary post-mortem report, it was found that the bear fell on a sharp object. This resulted in his backbone getting severely injured. The range officer present at the spot of the incident has been asked to investigate the matter further."
