BJP bags Arunachal Pradesh; tight race in Sikkim

Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh is all set to have its first elected BJP government with the party having won 23 seats and is leading in eight. While the Congress has won three seats, Janata Dal (United) has won six and Independent candidates won two seats. The National People’s Party has won one seat and is leading in two while the People’s Party of Arunachal won one seat.

Polls were held for 57 of the 60 seats.

Three BJP candidates won unopposed - Phurpa Tsering from Dirang, Taba Tedir from Yachuli and Kento Jini from Along East. Sikkim is witnessing an interesting electoral battle with the opposition party—Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) – winning 10 seats and leading in three of the total 32 assembly seats.

The ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has won five seats and is leading in five.

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, who has been ruling the state since 1994, is the longest serving chief minister in the country. He won from Poklok-Kamrang Assembly seat. Chamling defeated his nearest SKM rival Kharka Bahadur Rai by 2,899 votes.
