BJP, Congress in intense final push to win Guwahati

Guwahati: In a last-ditch effort to win the prestigious Guwahati Lok Sabha seat on the penultimate day of campaigning, BJP candidate Bijuli Kalita Medhi campaigned in Harijan colony in the city while Congress nominee Mira Borthakur spearheaded marathon poll rallies in Muslim-inhabited areas in West Kamrup vowing to “evict BJP govt” like the Muslims were evicted.

Bijuli on Saturday joined the discussion with voters from Harijan colony near Nehru Stadium saying they had no grievances.

“Our Harijan brothers and sisters have not complained of anything. During my meeting with them, they did not raise any issue but there is huge enthusiasm among them to vote for BJP and make Modi ji PM again,” said Bijuli.

Later in the day, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed an election meeting at Chandmari, campaigning for Bijuli, affirming that voters of Guwahati Lok Sabha will make Bijuli victorious by a margin of five lakh votes. He was seen seeking votes for the road and bridge infrastructure built under the BJP-led govt and developmental activities in the city. For a stable govt, he appealed to voters to vote for BJP. “If the Congress wins, no one knows who will be the PM — Lalu Prasad, Rahul Gandhi or Mamata Banerjee. But Modi ji is our Prime Minister,” said Sarma.

In Sontoli, Goroimari and neighbouring minority-inhabited areas, Borthakur addressed multiple poll rallies, where party candidate from Jorhat seat, Gaurav Gogoi, was also present.

“BJP govt has sowed seeds of hatred among people and infused hatred against Muslims, though Islam means peace. Muslims must not vote for BJP, which has brought hatred and conflicts,” Mira said in an election rally at Sontoli in the Boko assembly segment.

She alleged that in the name of NRC, BJP tried to put a foreigner’s tag on Muslims. “Himanta Biswa Sarma said he does not need votes of Muslims. Will people of Sontoli vote for BJP?” she asked. She trained guns at Modi, alleging that Modi called Muslim women “machines to give birth to babies. “If they still vote for BJP, it will be ‘gunaah’ for the followers of Islam,” said Mira.
