BJP worker found hanging from tree in west Midnapore

Midnapore: A BJP worker was found hanging from a tree near his home at Naranga Dighi village at Pingla, West Midnapore, on Sunday morning. His family pointed fingers at Trinamool Congress, which denied any involvement.

Pintu Manna (19) had joined BJP before the Lok Sabha polls and worked for the party. On Sunday, locals found his body hanging from a tamarind tree.

His face was covered with a gamchha. Pintu’s family accused TMC workers of killing him. However, TMC block president Sk Sabiruddin said: “None of our party workers is involved. Police are investigating.”

Six persons, including a woman, were arrested on Sunday. “Prima facie, it seems to be a suicide. We are awaiting the autopsy report,” additional SP Qazi Samsuddin Ahmed said.

In another incident, a BJP worker was shot at from point-blank range in Midnapore on Saturday evening. The victim, Raja Mazumdar, had allegedly got into an altercation with a TMC supporter near a toll plaza on NH10. “He was shot at from behind and the bullet pierced his left eye. He is critical,” Bengal BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu said. Based on a complaint, police arrested three persons. BJP has called an agitation programme on Monday in front of the SP’s office.

At Salboni, TMC worker Swapan Ghosh lodged a complaint on Sunday after he was allegedly beaten up by BJP workers.

A video of him being intimidated went viral on social media. Ghosh alleged he was returning home on Saturday night when BJP workers allegedly stopped him and told him not to work for TMC again. He was forced into a shop and beaten up. BJP district president Samir Das denied any knowledge of the incident, saying: “We will take steps if any party worker is involved.”
