Cases in A'bad drop below 150

Ahmedabad district has been reporting a consistent drop in number of new cases of Covid-19 daily. However, on Saturday, the count dropped below 150 after a gap of exactly 100 days, with 146 cases in 24 hours. There were 151 cases on April 23.

Of the 146 cases, 138 were from within city limits while 8 were from rural areas.

The total count of cases in the district reached 26,663 while the death toll was 1,601 with four more succumbing to the infection in 24 hours. AMC identified 13 new micro-containment areas and removed nine from the existing list. The city now has 258 containment areas.

1,136 new cases in Gujarat

Gujarat reported 1,136 new cases of coronavirus infection on Saturday, taking case tally to 62,574, the state health department said. With the death of 24 Covid-19 patients, the death toll due to the pandemic reached 2,465, it said.

The maximum cases, 262, were reported in Surat, followed by Ahmedabad. Vadodara reported 95 cases. Rajkot saw a marginal rise in its highest-ever, reporting 87 cases. Mehsana reported a fresh peak with 46 cases, higher than Friday’s tally of 40 cases. Its previous high was 86 on July 30. Jamnagar reported 42, its highest so far, for the second straight day. Bhavnagar got 44 cases and Junagadh 42. Among other districts, Gir Somnath reported 37 cases, Dahod 30, Gandhinagar 29, Kheda and Kutch 20 each, Narmada 19, Banaskantha and Valsad 17 each.

Of the 24 deaths, 12 were in Surat, 4 in Ahmedabad, 2 each in Mehsana and Vadodara and one each in Junagadh, Navsari, Patan and Porbandar.

22 of Cong MLA Lalit Kagathra’s relatives, friends positive: Sources

As many as 22 members and friends of Congress MLA from Tankara, Lalit Kagathra have tested positive for Covid-19, said sources. However, he and his wife have tested negative. Congress MLA from Gandhinagar North C J Chavda is under quarantine as a family member of his has been found to be Covid-positive. According to sources, Cabinet Minister for water supply, rural housing and Animal Husbandry Kunvarji Bavaliya is also under quarantine as a family member of his has been found to be positive.

In Ahmedabad, Meenal Mehta, program officer of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), tested positive on Saturday.
