CAUGHT! Woman lifts 5-day-old infant from Pollachi hospital; sent to Coimbatore Central prison

Coimbatore: The woman who lifted a 5-month-old baby from a government hospital in Pollachi, Coimbatore, has been arrested by police on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as 50-year-old Mariamma, who is a resident of  Udmalpet.

According to a report in ANI, the child belong to tribal couple, a resident of Narikalpathi village near Annamalai.

 

"As per the parents of the infant, the accused met them in the hospital and told them that her husband had been admitted in the male ward of the same hospital. She urged them to allow her to stay in a female ward with their child. She also promised the couple that she would look after their child. However, a few hours later, Mariamma ran away with the child from the hospital," the report quotes a police official as saying.

After the baby's kidnapping was reported to hospital authorities, the authorities examined the CCTV footage of the hospital premises and informed the police in Pollachi.

The Pollachi police later formed a team to nab the accused woman.  The police have registered an First Information Report (FIR) against the woman kidnapper and sent to Coimbatore Central Prison.

In November 2016, a woman was arrested by the police within hours of her kidnapping a newborn baby girl from a hospital in Coimbatore. The baby was later restored to her mother. The woman allegedly abducted the baby after she failed to conceive.

According to a report in PTI, the woman was said to have confessed to police that she could not conceive after an abortion four years ago. And she decided to steal a baby when her relatives and neighbours harassed over not having the baby.

The woman had been pretending that she was pregnant and used to frequent the hospital under the pretext of check-ups.
