Chandigarh municipal corporation pulls down 4 towers of cellular firm

CHANDIGARH: The engineering and enforcement departments of the Chandigarh municipal corporation took down four towers of a private cellular company from different areas of the city on Sunday.

The MC claimed that the move has been taken as the company failed to take required permission from them before erecting the towers on the municipal land.

Later, the company was given sufficient time to remove the towers, but they did not act during the given time frame and the MC took the step and took down the towers on Sunday.

All these four towers were erected in different locations of the city, including one in Kishangarh village, another in Sector 28 and the remaining two in the Industrial Areas, including one near the Elante Mall, Phase I. Around 70 employees of the municipal corporation, including the engineering officers and officers of the enforcement wings, were involved in the entire exercise to remove the towers. The process to remove the towers started around 10am and continued till night.

According to information, the matter dates to September 2019, when the MC noticed these towers. Sources in the municipal corporation revealed that the company first erected the towers without taking permission from the civic body and when the matter became public, the company deposited the fee and said it was approved.

“After inquiring the same, we asked them to remove the towers immediately by issuing a notice in September 2019, but they did not act on the same. After giving sufficient time, we served them another notice in July this year. After this, the company gave a representation to the UT adviser and he asked for the MC’s comments. As these towers were not erected after taking approval and the same cannot be regularised, we submitted a factual report and based on that, an order was issued to remove them,” sources revealed.
