Chennai: Hotter days ahead, forecast says temperatures to rise in a week

CHENNAI: Brace for hotter days as the temperature is likely to rise in one week. Experts said the mercury will touch 40 Celsius in most part of interior districts, while coastal regions, including Chennai, will see a temperature rise by a degree or two starting next weekend.

The regional meteorological centre forecast says for the next 48 hours, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 34 and 25 Celsius respectively with partly cloudy sky.

Weather bloggers said this condition is soon set to change as the winds from the easterly direction i.e. from the Bay of Bengal is likely to stop by next week.

"Land breeze will take over in interior districts. As the central parts of TN get heated up, it will get transported to northern districts of the state. In coastal regions like Chennai, the winds will change to southerly," said Pradeep John , a weather blogger.

Districts like Trichy, Madurai , Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri will see a rise that is comparatively significant from the temperatures recorded on Saturday. Chennai's neighbouring districts including Vellore , Villupuram, Tiruthani and Thiruvannamalai too will witness a soaring mercury. "Chennai will see southerly winds, which will still be from the sea. Hence, the temperatures will be around 36 or 37 Celsius, just like it was a few days ago. But there is nothing to worry about the rise anywhere in the state," John said. "Also, this rise will prevail for four or five days and the temperatures will again drop when the easterlies take over."

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued warning to fishermen not to venture into the sea as rough sea conditions are likely to prevail along the coast of south Tamil Nadu .

On Saturday, weathermen observed a drop in temperature, as high pressure in the atmosphere hovered over land area, with Chennai-Nungambakkam at 32.8 C and Meenambakkam station recording 33.7 C. But as the pressure moves towards the sea, temperatures are likely to change.

However, experts said Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu is yet to witness the period of transition to summer, which is likely to start from April.
