City witnesses wettest April day in 4 years

Chandigarh/Mohali: Chandigarh on Friday witnessed the highest 24-hour rainfall in April in the past four years. The rain was accompanied by hailstorm and thunderstorm.

The city recorded 13.5mm rainfall between 8.30pm on Thursday to 8.30 pm on Friday. Before this, the highest 24-hour rainfall was recorded at 40.3 mm in 2020.

Meanwhile, heavy rains in Zirakpur and its surrounding areas, led to significant distress.

Patiala crossing in Zirakpur was worst hit, where roads were submerged and numerous vehicles, especially two-wheelers and even cars, were stuck due to waterlogging.

The situation brought to light the failure of Zirakpur municipal council's claims of readiness to face the rains. With around 60% of storm water drains and road gullies clogged, the town's infrastructure was unable to cope with the rainfall, causing flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
