Coimbatore artists create a miniature replica of Jallianwala Bagh massacre

Three miniatures artists in the city are making heads turn with their innovative work. Pencil miniature artists Savithru M, Prashaanth DR and Vijayathithyan BB have created a miniature replica of the infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre to be displayed on the 73rd Independence Day . This year also marks the 100th year of the massacre.

As part of the art work, the artists have created 111 mini sculptures, which involve 100 people, 11 tanks and other vehicles used by the British government during the massacre.

Talking about the sculpture Savithru M says, “We are all waiting for some miracle to happen in life, but the nature’s theory is that we need to toil hard and sacrifice something for that miracle to happen. The freedom we are enjoying now has been taken for granted and we don’t remember the sacrifice people did to get us independence. We have done this in order to remind people about the sacrifice and to tell them we are enjoying this freedom at the cost of many lives and sacrifices.”

“We are also displaying a miniature spinning wheel (chakra), which is a working model, Amar Jawan Jyoti structure, a farmer with plough and 40 face sculptures of freedom fighters. The 40 sculptures were already displayed on Republic Day last year. All these structures are made of graphite and it took us one-and-a-half months to complete this project,” he adds.

The size of these structures are, Jal lianwala Bagh replica: common people and soldiers- height- 1cm; width- 0.3cm, tanks and other vehicles- length-1.5cm; width-1cm, spinning wheel- length- 4.3cm; height-3cm, Amar Jawan Jyoti structure- height- 4cm; width- 1.5cm; Farmer- height- 1cm; width- 1.25cm. The whole structure of Jallianwala Bagh incident has been done in a space of 24*24 cm.

The Indian Book of Record has confirmed that this Jallianwala Bagh miniature structure is a record in most number of graphite sculptures in the smallest space category informs Savithru. “All three of us have worked to create the miniature replica of Jallianwala Bagh and it was quite challenging to complete the structure. Our work will be displayed in a mall on Brooke Bond road on Independence day,” says Prashaanth.
