Cong MLA Laksman Singh takes a dig at Sibal, Singhvi and Tankha

Bhopal: Congress MLA from Chachoura seat and former MP Lakshman Singh on Friday stirred a hornet’s nest after he took a dig at senior party leaders Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vivek Tankha for being unable to secure bail for former finance minister P Chidambaram in the INX media corruption case.

Lakshman Singh, who is the younger brother of senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, has been known for his acerbic statements.

Taking to Twitter on Friday, the Congress leader said, “Chidambaramji is proved innocent, party gets a clean image, that is what I wish for. But sad that our ‘mathha dheesh’ (luminary) advocates, who have been repeatedly made members of the Rajya Sabha, could not get bail for him.”

His comments were an apparent dig at senior lawyer MPs of Congress Kapil Sibal, who is Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is also a member of the Upper House from West Bengal, and Vivek Tankha, a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh. All three leaders are representing Chidambaram as his lawyers in the CBI special court.

Meanwhile, state Congress leaders remained largely tight-lipped over the MLA’s comments. Chief minister Kamal Nath’s media convener Narendra Saluja said, “This is Lakshman Singh’s personal opinion and not what the party feels. Congress party has no doubt about the role of the lawyers who represented P Chidambaram. They have done a good job.”

This is not the first time that Lakshman Singh has made such controversial statements. Last year, during the assembly elections, the five-time former MP had said that appointment of senior leader Kamal Nath as state Congress president was like “playing HMV record in the age of bluetooth technology.” He later apologised for the statement.
