Doctors at MR Bangur Hospital said Das had diabetes and a sudden drop in his blood sugar level made him collapse.

He was discharged in the evening after being kept under observation for a few hours.

Mondal was managing traffic when he received he heard over the wireless system that a person had collapsed at the entrance to the Metro station. “When I reached the spot, I saw Das lying on the floor and people crowding around him. I had ORS and a life saving drug, which I carry with me since we have to attend to people who suddenly fall ill on the roads before they can be taken to hospitals. I administered the medicines and took him to the hospital,” the 39-year-old said. Mondal recently took over as the officer in charge of Bhowanipore Traffic Guard.

Das, a retired state government employee, is a resident of Birati and had gone to Hazra to meet an acquaintance. Mondal called up Das’s sister in Dankuni. “The doctors said he has chronic diabetes and a sudden fall in his sugar level made him collapse. The ORS helped revive him,” said Mondal.

Das thanked Mondal after he was discharged. “I don’t know what would have happened to me if the officer hadn’t helped,” he said.
