Delhi: Dwarka to get 1st corporation park with toy trains

NEW DELHI: Children may soon enjoy toy train rides at a municipal park with South Delhi Municipal Corporation planning to add this feature at the upcoming second Nandan Van in Dwarka .

The first Nandan Van was inaugurated last year in Greater Kailash . Horticulture department officials said the second park is being developed in Dwarka Sector 19 and is expected to be inaugurated on Children’s Day.

The park is spread over 2.5 acre near Vardhaman Mall and was recently handed over to the civic body by DDA . These Nandan Vans are touted as facilities to provide mini-amusement parks for children after the closure of Appu Ghar.

The second Nandan Van is expected to be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 90 lakh, of which around Rs 15 lakh will be spent on the toy train facility. “People pay a nominal entry fee at the Nandan Van in GK and a similar model will be followed for the Dwarka facility,” an official said.

South corporation’s additional commissioner Ramesh Verma said the parks are the first such initiatives being undertaken by the civic body. Its former mayor, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, said the plan to develop this park was chalked out during her tenure. “This will be the first corporation park where toy trains will be run. The plan earlier was to create tracks for toy trains but the 2.5 acre area is spread out in a manner that it will not be possible. Hence, the options of rubber wheel toy trains are being explored,” she added.

A civic official said that corporate social responsibility funds are to be used for this project. “A toy train will have five carts, with each unit having space to house four kids,” he added.
