Does your yoga mat's health mat-ter?

Picture this: On a scorching summer morning, you resolve to practice yoga at your favorite park. Even though you’re sweating like a melting popsicle, nothing can stop you from finding your inner peace in the (almost) fresh air.

You reach your yoga spot and roll out your mat to start your flow, only to be greeted by a funky smell from yesterday’s sweaty session.
And more than that, instead of being a stable and supportive companion to your practice, your mat (riddled with that sweat) has become more of a slip ‘n slide situation. Not the vibe you were going for, right?

Well, of course not.

Mat care often gets overlooked and is not talked about enough, but it’s one of the most imperative things a yogi should do regularly (especially during these searing summer months)! Regular cleaning and airing out your mat keep it smelling fresh, prevent bacteria buildup, and ensure its longevity.

But perhaps the most profound reason to care for your yoga mat is to show gratitude for supporting, cushioning, and providing stability through your journey. And wouldn’t you say that taking care of your yoga mat is also a way of engaging in a ritual of mindfulness and self-care? We think so, and being a yogi, we know you’re wise enough to concur.

So, we’ve put together a few pointers on how you can take care of your yoga mats that work for both— your eco-friendly mats and the others.

To take proper care of your mat, first, learn the kind of care it requires. Is it washable or not? Is it sweat-absorbent or resistant? Does it have PVC, or is it PVC-free? All this information makes your basic structure for the cleaning process. While most mats can be cleaned with a damp cloth, the washable ones can be cleaned with water and soap.
Your mat is a fan of your sun salutation asana, but not of direct sunlight. Rubber mats are sensitive to direct sunlight and high temperatures, which may cause them to degrade over time and shrink. So, when not in use, store your mat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

After cleaning, allow your mat to air dry completely before rolling it up, or else it could develop creases or mildew.

During particularly sweaty sessions, consider placing a microfiber towel on top of your mat to absorb excess moisture.

Refrain from using harsh chemicals, and damaging cleaners on your TPE mat. Stick to mild, eco-friendly cleaners which not only sanitizes your mat but also leaves it smelling fresh!

Caring for your yoga mat isn’t just about maintaining a piece of rubber, it’s about honoring the sacred space you create with each practice. Treat it with kindness and watch as your practice blossoms and evolves.
