done/ updated Min temp in Shivajinagar drops to 15.3 deg C for a winter-like feel

Pune: In a kick-off to a change in the season, citizens experienced a sudden dip in the minimum temperature on Thursday when Pune recorded its coolest post-monsoon morning.

The mercury fell to 15.3 degrees celsius in Shivajinagar on Thursday an overnight drop of around three degrees. Wednesday had recorded 18.1 degrees celsius as the minimum temperature.

The minimum temperature is recorded at 8.30am but the lowest minimum temperature is just before sunrise on a clear sky day.

The sudden dip in the city’s minimum temperature was entirely a local phenomenon, associated with lower relative humidity and a clear sky on Thursday morning, Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, India Meteorological Department, Pune, told TOI.

The temperature in Pune was as low as that in several North Indian stations, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, and just a tad higher than Jammu and Dehradun.

“The sudden plunge could be attributed to the orography of Pune. From November 13 till November 14 early morning, the city’s relative humidity was less by around 7% in comparison to November 12. Moreover, the cloud cover on the morning of November 14 was nil. The previous day there was 2 okta cloud cover. The low relative humidity and the lack of cloud cover led to a dip of almost 3 degrees overnight,” Kashyapi said.

Some locations in Maharashtra also recorded minimum temperatures lower than stations in north India on Thursday. Aurangabad recorded 12.6 degrees celsius, around 2.1 degrees below the normal and Ahmednagar had 12.2 degrees celsius, around 3.6 degrees below the normal. Both were cooler that Mahabaleshwar which was 13.4 degrees celsius.

The minimum temperatures in North India are currently running higher than normal while Pune's minimum is around a degree above normal. Ambala was 15.1 degrees celsius, Dehradun was 13.5 degrees celsius, Jammu was 15 degrees celsius, Ludhiana was 15.5 degrees celsius, and New Delhi was 15.4 degrees celsius.

The temperatures in North India were significantly above the normal as western disturbance, a weather phenomenon, persisted as a cyclonic circulation over Afghanistan and its neighbourhood and induced a cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and its neighbourhood.

“Regions in North India are experiencing bad weather, including rain and snowfall, which has caused the clouding to increase there, resulting in a rise in minimums in those places,” Kashyapi said.

What Is The Connection?

Clear skies help in unhindered escape of long-wave radiation emitted through the earth’s surface during the night to the atmosphere. Since this radiation has a warming nature, its escape into the atmosphere is associated with cooler temperatures near the Earth’s surface
